Magazine B AKER CITY — The art of comics isn’t just the fi nal product, and Justin Zimmerman will lead a workshop in early May about how to get into the world of making comics. “A comic book is pitching, writing an outline and script,” he said. “I’ll help people unlock how to make a comic book so it’s not a mystery.” The workshop is set for May 7 and May 8 at Churchill School, 3451 Broadway St. The Saturday session is 2-4 p.m., and Sunday’s workshop is noon-2 p.m. Zimmerman will explain how to pitch an idea, outline a story, cre- ate character descriptions and make a thumbnail of the script. “We learn the language and then work together to make sto- ries,” he said. Zimmerman has an MFA in fi lm and is a nationally recognized fi lmmaker — his narrative and documentary work has appeared in more than 200 fi lm festivals across the globe and been broadcast on public television, where he won two international television awards. His history with comics, though, goes back to when he read “Elf Quest” by Wendy and Richard Pini. “They were incredible,” he said. “I was completely trans- ported. I think that shaped my love of comics.” Zimmerman has worked in comics for about 10 years — writ- ing, creating and editing in the graphic novel fi eld. He also creates motion trailers for all his books. He works with a variety of artists who create images for the script, and he will show this original artwork, and explain the process from art to graphic novel, during a special exhibition on First Friday, May 6, at Churchill starting at 5:30 p.m. This is the fi rst show of its kind that he’s presented to the public. “The art is phenomenal,” Zim- merman said. “There’s a wide va- riety of artists with a wide variety of techniques.” To learn more about his work, visit www.brickerdown.com.
